The Road to becoming a Financial Advisor/Planner
My name is Nick Thom and my first and only career of choice has been as a Financial Planner/Advisor. I made the decision to pursue this career path all the way back in high school. It all began when I completed the Myers-Briggs Personality Test. Using my results from that test, I consulted resources put out by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. Based on my new found understanding of myself, I chose to further my education in pursuit of becoming a financial advisor. I attended Minnesota State University, Mankato and in 2006, I received a Bachelor of Science in Economics. Finally, I was able to begin my career as a Financial Advisor. I began my career as a financial advisor working for a larger firm the very same week in which I graduated.
Professional Experience
I was employed as a financial advisor employee with a larger firm for over 11 years. During that time, I experienced many accomplishments. I studied for and completed several licensing exams including the Series 7 – General Securities Representative exam, Series 66 – Uniform Combined State Law exam and also the Minnesota Life and Health Insurance Agent exam. I became a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ (CFP®) practitioner in 2017. In May of 2008 my teammate and Senior Relationship Manager, Julie Goetsch-Landaas, joined me. Since then, Julie and I have worked alongside each other to serve our clients. Julie is a deeply valued member of my team.
Throughout my career as a financial advisor employee I observed various changes as the company grew and, as they say, all good things come to an end. In November of 2017 Julie and I choose to leave that company. It was at that point that we started the financial planning, brokerage, and advisory firm Tailored Financial Services as a way to better serve our clients with the autonomy to do what I felt was in our client’s best interests.

I understand that reaching your financial objectives hinges on having the right plan. That is, a plan that fits your unique circumstances and grows with you. I am a trained, licensed professional, drawing on years of financial planning experience and I take into account the full range of needs you have now and the needs you may have in the future while periodically reviewing your strategy, consulting with you to make appropriate adjustments, and assisting you in keeping your plan on track. At Tailored Financial Services I offer independent, qualified investment advice dedicated to helping you build wealth and preserve your hard-earned assets. Clients are not limited to investment platforms, products, or research. I recommend only the products and services that can be tailored to suit your unique needs. Nick’s Personal Life
Born, raised and educated right here in southern Minnesota, I have been married to my wife, Laura, since 2011. We have three awesome children, Jack (born in 2013), Olivia (born in 2015) and Charlotte (born in 2023), who we love to spend lots of time with. I enjoy hunting, fishing and boating, snowmobiling, playing billiards and golfing. I am a current member of the Nicollet Public Schools, Independent School District 507, School Board. I have also volunteered as a board member and President for the New Ulm Jaycees and the Kiwanis Club of New Ulm and am a current volunteer member the New Ulm Jaycees.
About Julie
Julie and her husband Jim live in Gaylord with their two dogs, a shi-tzu/bichon named Pinot and an ivory lab named Riesling. They have 3 adult son’s, BJ, Nate and Aaron, 4 grandchildren, Bailey, Emily, Pierce and Lennon. Julie’s hobbies include walking the dogs, fishing, reading, watching MN Wild hockey and gardening.
